#BreakingNews : CACOTOPIA Unleash Self-Titled Album, Expanding the Boundaries of Progressive Black Metal

Loves Park, IL’s CACOTOPIA, the independent 2-piece progressive black metal force, has returned with their latest release — a self-titled album dropped on May 2nd, 2025.

Formed by lifelong friends Randy Bakkelund (guitar, bass, drum programming) and Matt Swanberg (vocals), CACOTOPIA’s roots trace back to the late ’90s as a death metal project, before evolving into a black metal entity in 2002. From basement jams to full-length releases, the duo has carved a reputation for fusing dark, dystopian lyricism with a unique blend of progressive experimentation, death metal undertones, and searing guitar solos rarely heard in the genre.

Their journey includes two early demos (2007, 2009), a menacing debut Inhuman Agitation (2014), and the crushing follow-up Centuries of Bloodshed (2018). With their latest self-titled record, CACOTOPIA continue their mission: to craft the darkest, most evil music possible while challenging black metal’s conventions.
